Keeping Your Leather Kit Clean

Your leather wear is part and parcel of the great biker look. – But as you probably know, it is subject to more wear and tear than everyday leather clothes, so you have to know how to look after it, to keep it looking great, and usable for many years.

When you have new motorcycle clothing or are looking to buy some from a popular website such as XL moto, you want to keep it looking tip-top. But in order to do this, your leather garments and accessories must be kept clean and protected from moisture.

Understanding the PH

The first thing you need to know is that leather ranks as PH neutral, so to that end, you must look for a specific leather bike wear cleaner which is PH neutral, otherwise you can permanently damage it. And be sure to always avoid other types of cleaners, including soaps, waxes, and oils. Getting the right cleaner is not difficult, as it can easily be found online. And once you have it, you will see that it lasts for ages.

Using Your Motorbike Specific Cleaner

Take a look at the instructions before you begin, and then get hold of a cotton washcloth or terry towel, and wipe the leather using circular motions. As an alternative, you can use a sponge or very soft brush, in the same way. (Never use clothes made from micro-fiber, as they cause damage). Apply a mild scrubbing action. Just be gentle, so that you loosen the dirt and grime. Following this, rinse it off using a slightly damp sponge that has been dipped in warm water.

What Do I Do If My Leathers Are Really Dirty?

This is a common problem that happens from time to time, but you have to follow the correct procedure, and not do what many bikers automatically do – and that is to soak them in water because they are really dirty inside and outside. This is no good, as it makes the leather swell up, and makes the fabric weak. Unfortunately, the only solution is to send them to dry cleaners. The cost is not exactly cheap, at around fifty pounds, but they do normally do a good job, and they use an ozone chamber to kill off any bacteria on the inside of the jacket and trousers.

Storing Your Motorcycling Clothing The Right Way

This is easy – just hang them in a place where there is lots of circulating air. An open clothes stand is ideal. Never put them in a damp, cold garage or shed, as they will go moldy, and you will never be able to wear them again! And that is not on – as you want to protect your investment for the thing you really love – motorcycling!
